Libraries and languages
Libraries, folders and pages
A library holds folders and pages. Folders nest; the page list on the left of the library is the same tree readers see in the sidebar. Every page has an address made of the library's slug, its folders and its own slug: /handbook/billing/invoices.
From a page's menu in the page list you can rename it, move it, hide it from the published site, translate it or delete it. Each of these is a change in a change request, like an edit.
- Hidden pages stay in the library for your team but are not shown on the published site.
- Deleted pages and folders go to the trash, where they can be restored for 90 days.
- Renamed or moved pages keep their old address working: it forwards to the new one.
A library's languages
Each library has one or more languages and a default language. Owners and admins change them in the library's Settings, under Languages. Docs Ahoy supports 39 languages and regional variants, such as fr, fr-be and fr-ca.
Addresses carry the language, except for the default one:
| Language | Address |
|---|---|
| Default (English, say) | https://your-team.docsahoy.eu/handbook/billing |
| French | https://your-team.docsahoy.eu/handbook/fr/billing |
Changing the default language changes addresses; the old ones forward to the new ones. Removing a language hides its pages from readers. They are kept and come back when you add the language again.
Translating
A document is a page in all its languages. To translate a page, choose Translate to… in its menu and pick the language: the translation starts as a new page in your change request. Folder names can be translated too.
The library's Translations screen lists every page in each language:
- Original: the page in the language it was written in;
- Up to date: a translation made since its original last changed;
- Outdated: the original changed after the translation was made;
- Translate: no translation yet.
A page without a translation is still shown to readers of that language, in its original language, with a note saying it hasn't been translated yet. Readers switch languages with the language menu on every page; search engines get the alternates of every page (hreflang).
Plans
Plans differ in how many libraries, documents and languages they include. See the pricing page.
