# Links between pages

A link to another page of your team is stored as a **page reference**, not as an address:

```markdown
See [the import guide](page:018f2c3a-1111-4222-8333-444455556666).
```

Choose **Page link** in the `/` menu to pick the page; the editor writes the reference for you. You can add a section: `page:…#the-report`.

## Why references

Because the link names the page and not its address, it keeps working when the page is renamed, moved to another folder, or the library's slug changes. On the published site, the reference becomes the page's current address.

A link to a page that isn't viewable (an unpublished library, a page in the trash) shows as plain text instead of a dead link. A reference to a page that doesn't exist is marked "Missing page", so you notice it.

## Before you delete

A page that other pages still link to can't be deleted until those links are removed: the merge says which pages link to it. That way no link breaks silently.

## Old addresses keep working

When a page, folder or library gets a new address, the old address forwards to the new one. Links from outside, bookmarks and search results keep working.

## Links to other websites

Ordinary Markdown links: `[Docs Ahoy](https://docsahoy.com)`.
