# Custom domains

Any library can be served on a domain of your own, such as `docs.example.com`, instead of your team's address. Owners and admins manage domains on the **Custom domains** screen: in a library's **Settings**, under **Custom domain**, choose **Manage custom domains** (or open `https://app.docsahoy.com/team/domains`).

## Add and verify a domain

1. Add the domain, without `https://` or a path: `docs.example.com`.
2. At the company that runs your domain's DNS, add the **TXT record** the screen shows. Its name starts with `_docsahoy-challenge.`; its value is a code made for your team. It proves the domain is yours.
3. Press **Check again**. We ask your domain's own nameservers, so a record you just added is usually found straight away; some DNS hosts take a while to publish it.

## Point it at Docs Ahoy

Readers can only reach the domain once it points at us:

- a subdomain such as `docs.example.com` gets a **CNAME** record with the value `custom.docsahoy.eu`;
- a bare domain such as `example.com` can't have a CNAME: it gets the **A** and **AAAA** addresses the screen shows.

```
_docsahoy-challenge.docs.example.com   TXT     "the code from the screen"
docs.example.com                       CNAME   custom.docsahoy.eu
```

## Choose its libraries

In a library's **Settings**, under **Custom domain**, choose the verified domain. Each domain can have its own home library: the library its bare address opens.

## The certificate

Once a published library is on the domain and it points at us, a certificate is issued automatically, usually within seconds. You don't upload or renew anything.

Only when the domain is verified, points at us and opens securely do we send readers there. Until then, the library stays at your team's address. After that, the team address forwards to the domain, so old links keep working.

## Removing a domain

Removing a domain serves its libraries on your team's address again.
